Melqart · phoenician

A striding bearded man, bare-chested and barefoot, in a short loincloth-skirt and a conical, dome-shaped cap, a fenestrated axe over his shoulder and an ankh or lotus flower in his other hand (the 9th–8th c. BCE Bir-Hadad stele from near Aleppo). On Tyrian silver coins he rides a hippocamp (seahorse) and holds a bow. The lion skin and club are Heraclean iconography adopted from the 6th c. BCE (Cyprus, Gades coins), a Hellenized form; at Tyre itself the Phoenicians made no large cult statue — he was represented by an eternal fire.
